Biography
Much of Barry Cawston's photography has both Sociological and Architectural elements, which is why work for several international charities and English Heritage form the core of his photographic commissions. With success in the Nikon/BJP Endframe competition - www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html followed by winning the Exeter Contemporary Open and the Chairman's Choice Award at the RWA Photographic Open, there has been growing interest and exposure for his fine art photographic prints, which are now held in several notable private collections.
Together with his partner Soraya Schofield, he has set up The Drugstore Gallery - www.thedrugstoregallery.com- which has exhibited at the Affordable Art Fairs in London, Bristol and Paris as well as the Nothern and Edinburgh Art Fairs. The gallery has become a successful showcase for their fine art prints as well as those of a selection of their favourate photographic artists.
Below is an extract from Proof Magazine about the Exeter Contemporary Open and Barry's winning image 'Tibetan Cowboy' (James Dean)
"The selection panel (Jem Southam, Professor of Photography, University of Plymouth / Jeremy Diggle, Professor of Fine Art, University of Plymouth, and Kate Jago, Editor of Proof magazine) were looking for individual pieces of work with integrity of purpose, innovative process and a particularly contemporary ambition. We hoped to have our eyes widened a little in wonder. We were not disappointed.
The winning artwork is a photograph. It is a hugely successful image but much more, it is a skilfully constructed picture. There are elements that reference an understanding of landscape and figuration that span the history of picture making in western art. The artist subliminally makes parallel visual connections between works of artists as diverse as Piero de la Francescio, Giotto, Fra Angelico, Edward Weston and later contemporary artists such as Andreas Gursky. In making the selection for the exhibition and ultimately the overall winner, the judges were unanimous in their recognition of this work’s outstanding qualities."
